Frequently Asked Questions

Caulking is not a covered warranty item and is first the responsibility of the installing contractor then the Homeowner depending on the age. Contact your installing dealer or contractor.

My windows have condensation

Condensation is different than a seal failure. Condensation is on the surface of the window as opposed to between the panes of glass. Condensation can be touched, a seal failure cannot. Condensation on windows may occur as the natural result of humidity within the house or building area and changes in interior and exterior temperatures, and does not indicate a defect in the window. The warranty does not cover condensation, frost or freezing from condensation on the windows. The humidity levels can be checked accurately using a sling psychrometer, one can be obtained through www.bacharach- inc.com/sling-psychrometer.htm

On double hung windows make sure the top window is pushed all the way up and the bottom sash is all the way down prior to throwing the locks. Also make sure the tilt latches are engaged and lock is in the unlocked or open position prior to shutting the Frequent Field Service Questions Double hung won’t lock Unacceptable Acceptable sashes.

Stress cracks are usually caused by a quick change in temperatures. The beginning of a heating season or a sudden dramatic drop in temperatures can cause a stress crack. Any blemish on the edge of the cut glass will carry into a stress crack.

Dirt, spots, or debris inside the glass should be checked compared to the insulated glass specs to see if replacement is required.

My glass is cloudy, moisture inside
Seal failures are a result of a failure of the hermetic seal of the insulated glass unit. Film formation, dust, or moisture collection between the panes of glass are considered a seal failure.

I have tried cleaning my window and it does not clean.
If regular cleaners do not clean the vinyl part of the window, you can use Soft Scrub with bleach on a wet rag and it should take care the issue. Test a small area before proceeding.

There are insects coming into my home
Are the screens in the proper position? On the double hungs are the screens pushed down to the sill? With a half screen do not vent the window from the top; even with the screen at the top, you will lose the screen seal at the meeting rail. If you want to vent from the top, you will need to order a full screen. On sliders or roller windows make sure the screen is all the way to the right from the interior, and only vent from the right with a half screen. You will need to order a full screen if you want to vent from the left

Locks do not line up
Locks and keepers on most window models can be realigned with the use of the adjustable keepers (see “Repair Adjustable Keeper” in “Field Repair”). If they are beyond that adjustment, check that the mainframe on the double hungs are installed plumb, level and square, that the window is shimmed evenly and that the sash is not out of square. On the slider windows check that the sill is level and properly supported, if the sill is sagging the locks will not line Keeper can be adjusted up, especially the upper lock

The lock latch is out of adjustment and does not engage the latch. See “Adjust Patio Door Latch” in “Field Repair” for adjustment.

Pivot pins are easily Frequent Field Service Questions The pivot pin is broken replaced with just a phillips screw driver; a replacement sash is not needed. See “Replace Pivot Pins” in “Field Repai”

My sash came out and I can’t put it back in
Before attempting to return the sash to the window frame make sure the balance shoe is in the proper position. The shoe should be several inches from the sill and the center cam should be positioned so that the open section of the shoe is upright. Make sure both shoes are at the same level and put the sash back in by holding the sash at 90 degrees to the frame and positioning the pins back into the shoes and tilting the sash back into the operating position. Once the sash is in position, lift the sash and look at both sides under the sash to make certain that the sash is engaged in the shoes. See “Install Double Hung Sash” in “Field Repair”.

Sash can be out of track as it is not secured to balance shoe or pivot pin has been damaged.
You can find in “Field Repair” Section:

  • Remove Double Hung Sash
  • Install Double Hung Sash
  • Replace Pivot Pins

If the sash is too tight make sure the window was not over shimmed during installation. You can do this with a level checking the jambs or measure the frame width at the head, sill and mid point. See “Measure Sash for Overall Size” in “Field Repair” section. Check that the pivot pins are not in too far inside the sash and that they are even side to side. Check the sash sizing on the Engineering Tech Center, calculated specs.

Newer windows with constant force or black and tackle balances are formulated with balances calculated to the weight of the sash. Check the serial number and or the model and size of the window and it will give you the size and strength of the balance; constant force are color coded on the bottom edge of the shoe for viewing in the installed window and block and tackle are stamped or printed on the Out of Shoe lower end of the balance itself. Sashes may slide down if disconnected from the shoe, whether the pivot pin is out of the shoe or the pin may be broken. If the sashes are still engaged the balance may need adjusting or replacing, contact your local dealer or Supply Center. See “Sash Won’t Stay Up – Out of Shoe” in Broken Pivot Pin “Field Repair” section.

Can be caused from poor sill support during installation of large sliders. Make sure the roller track is level and all the way in the sill. Lock must be in the unlocked or open position prior to shutting the sashes. On sliders make sure both sashes are pushed to the left and right before shutting and locking the window. Sash and Frame must also be square and make sure there is no weld flash in corners of frame.

Tilt latches are easily replaced by sliding the mechanism out toward the exterior edges of the sash. Some are held in with a tab on the underside of the tilt latch mechanism and can be pried up and out with a small screwdriver. See “Field Repair section for:

  • Repair Tilt Latch – Welded
  • Repair Tilt Latch – Non Welded

Vent latches are easily replaced on Vent latch is broken sashes if damaged. Some come out just by opening the mechanism and pulling down on it to release it from the hole in the sash rail (0900). Or they can be removed with a corner of a stiff putty knife or 5 & 1 tool. The welded sash models have tabs on the top and bottom of the vent locks that need to be compressed in order to pull the latch out. Just supply the Supply Center or your contractor with the serial number located on the window.

See “Field Repair” Section for:

  • Repair Vent Latch – Welded
  • Repair Vent Latch – Non Welded

Water on the interior sill of the window was caused by the exterior weep system being blocked by the wood trim and caulking. The water was not able to evacuate quick enough and backed up through the wood frame and also through the glazing of the window causing the interior damages.

Most anytime you find water infiltration coming in at the head of the window it is usually caused by something to do with the installation of the window. These photos show a new construction and a replacement window. The new construction window was flashed improperly, the flashing should be applied as a Weather Resistant Barrier, sill, jambs then head all overlapping the next layer down. In other words the flashing is applied so that water will cascade down the wall and will be shed over the flashing and down to the ground. In this case it was flashed to allow water in behind the nail fin of the window. The replacement window coil work was applied on top of j-channel and not sealed allowing water in behind the coil work and on top of the window

To install or replace, see “Field Repair” Section for “Replace Weep Hole Covers”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Customers tell us the most confusing part of buying a roof is choosing a warranty. So, here’s our answers to some of the most popular questions.

All GAF roofing shingles and qualifying accessories (the “GAF Products”) come with the great coverage provided by the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty, and you don’t need to do anything at all to get it. In the event you experience a problem with your GAF Products caused by a manufacturing defect, this warranty is a great start. See GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

Neither the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty nor the GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty require registration. Simply hold on to your proof of purchase (such as your contract with your installer, or invoice from roofing supply store or retail store where you purchased the GAF Products), which will need to be provided to GAF in the unlikely event you experience a problem with your GAF Products during the warranty term and need to file a claim. Enhanced warranties (such as the System Plus Limited Warranty, Silver Pledge Limited Warranty, and Golden Pledge Limited Warranty) do require registration, but your GAF Certified Contractor will take care of that. If you purchase an enhanced warranty from a GAF Certified Contractor and do not receive a copy of your warranty and registration within 60 days after the installation is complete, call GAF at 1-877-423-7663.

For a complete list of GAF Shingles and Qualifying GAF Accessories which are eligible for a Lifetime limited warranty, visit gaf.com/LRS.

When you install a GAF Roofing System (defined as GAF Lifetime Shingles plus at least 3 Qualifying Accessories), you are automatically eligible for the coverage provided by the GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty – which provides the same great coverage as the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty but adds Lifetime coverage on your Qualifying Accessory Products. Depending on what products you install, you may also be eligible for the WindProven Limited Wind Warranty. See GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

The System Plus Limited Warranty provides all of the same coverage available in the GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty, but the Smart Choice Protection Period is extended from 10 years to 50 years, and tear-off is included (when necessary). See System Plus Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

The Silver Pledge Limited Warranty provides all of the same coverage available in the System Plus Limited Warranty, but also offers 10 years of workmanship coverage and disposal (when necessary). See Silver Pledge Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

The Golden Pledge Limited Warranty provides all of the same coverage available in the Silver Pledge Limited Warranty, but the workmanship coverage lasts for 20, 25, or 30 years (depending on the type of shingles you choose to install). See Golden Pledge Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

The word “Lifetime” refers to the length of coverage provided by your GAF warranty and means as long as you, the original owner(s) [or the second owner(s) if coverage was properly transferred during the Smart Choice Protection Period], own the property where the shingles and/or accessories are installed. The Lifetime limited warranty is applicable only to shingles and accessories installed on a single-family detached residence owned by individuals. For any other type of owner or building, such as a corporation, governmental entity, religious entity, condominium or homeowner association, school, apartment building, office building, or multi-use structure, the length of the warranty is 40 years.

The Smart Choice Protection Period refers to the crucial period of time following installation of the GAF Products during which the coverage provided for in your GAF warranty is non-prorated. After the Smart Choice Protection Period, the remedy provided for in your GAF Warranty may be different than that provided for during the Smart Choice Protection Period, and any remedy will be reduced to reflect the use you have received from your GAF Products. The amount of use will be calculated by dividing the number of months which have elapsed since installation to the date of claim by the number of months in the warranty term. For a Lifetime limited warranty, the number of months in the warranty term is deemed to be 600 for years 11-40 of the warranty term. For years 41 and beyond of a Lifetime warranty, GAF’s contribution is 20%. For example, if you make a claim for Lifetime shingles after they have been installed for 25 years (or 300 months), your settlement will be reduced by 300/600, or 50%.

In the event that GAF approves your warranty claim for a manufacturing defect during the Smart Choice Protection Period, GAF will provide you with replacement GAF Products and will pay you the full reasonable cost of labor to install the replacement GAF Products. After the Smart Choice Protection Period, labor is no longer covered and the amount of replacement GAF Products will be reduced to reflect the use you have received from your GAF Products from the date of installation to the date of claim.

The Golden Pledge Limited Warranty and Silver Pledge Limited Warranty both offer coverage for misapplication of your GAF Products and flashings at valleys, dormers, chimneys, and plumbing vents (“Covered Flashings”). This coverage is also commonly referred to as “workmanship” coverage, and these warranties are only available through GAF Master Elite Roofing Contractors. For a list of GAF Master Elite Roofing Contractors in your area, please visit our contractor locator.

In the event that GAF determines there is an application error which falls within the scope of the coverage provided for in the Golden Pledge or Silver Pledge Limited Warranty, GAF will arrange to have your roof repaired or, at its sole option, will provide you with replacement GAF Products and reimburse you for the full reasonable cost of labor and other materials to repair your roof, including Covered Flashings. See Golden Pledge Limited Warranty and Silver Pledge Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

Algae warranty coverage is available in all GAF warranties covering shingles and accessories. All StainGuard Plus™-labeled shingles, ridge cap shingles and StarterMatch® starter strip shingles carry a 25-year limited warranty and 10-year non-prorated period against algae discoloration caused by blue-green algae. All StainGuard®-labeled shingles carry a 10-year limited warranty and 1-year non-prorated period. There is no coverage for algae discoloration for any other GAF Accessory Products. Your StainGuard Plus™-labeled shingles, ridge cap shingles and starter strips may be eligible for a 15-year non-prorated period if you purchase an enhanced warranty through a GAF certified-contractor. The remedy provided in the event of a claim is the reasonable cost of commercially cleaning your shingles, ridge cap shingles, or StarterMatch® starter strip shingles, or at GAF’s sole option, replacing the discolored shingles, ridge cap shingles, or StarterMatch® starter strip shingles. See applicable warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

Wind Warranty coverage is available in all GAF warranties covering shingles and accessories. Wind Warranty coverage on GAF shingles and ridge cap shingles lasts for 15 years. There is no wind warranty coverage for any other GAF Accessory Products. Maximum wind speed coverage depends on the type of shingles or ridge cap shingles installed on your roof, as well as the installation method. The remedy provided in the event of a claim is reimbursement for the reasonable costs of replacing blown-off shingles or damaged shingles or ridge cap shingles and hand-sealing any unsealed shingles or ridge cap shingles. See applicable warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

The WindProven Limited Wind Warranty is an industry-first: 15-year limited wind warranty with no maximum wind speed limitation. In order to qualify for WindProven Limited Wind Warranty coverage, you must install GAF LayerLock-labeled shingles and at least four (4) qualifying GAF Accessory Products, including GAF Ridge Cap Shingles, GAF Starter Strip Shingles, and a GAF Roof Deck Protection Product, plus your choice of either a GAF Leak Barrier Product or GAF Attic Ventilation Product. Visit gaf.com/LRS for a complete list of qualifying GAF Shingles and Accessory Products.

The WindProven Limited Wind Warranty provides coverage for your LayerLock-labeled shingles ONLY. The WindProven Limited Wind Warranty does not cover any GAF Accessory Products. The remedy provided in the event of a claim is reimbursement for the reasonable costs of replacing blown-off or damaged shingles and hand-sealing any unsealed shingles. See GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

Any conditions resulting from anything other than an inherent manufacturing defect in the GAF Products (or their Misapplication if you have a Golden Pledge or Silver Pledge Limited Warranty) are NOT covered. This includes, but is not limited to, failure to install adequate ventilation. Please be sure to discuss ventilation with your roofing contractor prior to the installation of your new roof.

GAF enhanced warranties are only available through GAF certified roofing contractors. GAF Certified Contractors can offer the System Plus Limited Warranty. GAF Master Elite Contractors can offer all GAF enhanced warranties, including the Silver Pledge Limited Warranty and Golden Pledge Limited Warranty. To find a GAF certified contractor in your area, please visit our contractor locator.
